RESTORING THE PAST,
ENSURING THE FUTURE

RESTORATION URGENTLY REQUIRED
Please can you help us?

For special fundraising events
please refer to the Events page.

Here is a brief list of all works required:

External
• Stonework renewal and re-pointing
• Re-building buttresses and wall sections
• Glazing repairs to windows, improved openings and painting of ferramenta
• More effective rainwater goods
• Lead burned renewals of roof areas, flashings and local reconstruction of parapet gutter

Internal
• Consolidation work to timber corbels in high roof of chancel
• Renovation of other roof situations
• Re-pointing to walls, window surrounds and re-levelling of stone slab floors
• Preservation of screens, furniture and monuments
• Improved provision of access ladders and platforms within the spire

We are therefore trying to raise over £400,000 for these works to be carried out in order to preserve this ancient house of prayer for future generations of which £200,000 is needed most urgently.

ABOUT THE RESTORATION PROJECT

Today, in a world of changed circumstances and with different priorities, the emphasis has to be on conservation rather than more large-scale artistic or structural additions.  However, as well as the major repair work required to the exterior structure on the north and east sides, completing in effect what was under-taken on the tower and spire in the 1980s, our objective is to raise sufficient money to allow the adaptation of the vestry area for more flexible use, perhaps by replacing the long-vanished upper floor, and the possible introduction of suitable lavatory provision.  Work on the fine pipe organ has already been successfully completed and in the longer term the cleaning and restoration of the many fine wall tablets and memorial plaques, as well as a host of other desirable work, would bring our current project to a happy and successful conclusion.
